Dear Readers: As the Democrat on our team of bloggers, the SLOBs, I felt duty bound to watch at least parts of the convention and summarize some highlights. I can only shake my head: the party of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson seems to have taken a hard left turn at the corner of Occupy Wall Street.
Listening to the speakers, the chief topic that the Democrats seem to be focused on is reproductive rights. This is a little mystifying to me, in light of the very weak employment figures, high gas prices, and $16 Trillion in national debt. I suspect more women are worried about putting food on tables and gas in cars than a penis in their vaginas. But hell, that’s just me.
The DNC speeches yesterday were the most appalling display of sex-focused sexism I have ever seen.
And how about that new civility! Many of the speakers came off as very angry. However, former OHIO Governor Ted Strickland gave an anger-imbued speech that is a great example of the toxicity that peppers much of the material emanating from Charlotte this week.
Here is the line from that speech that I despise most: Now, Mitt Romney, he lives by a different code. To him, American workers are just numbers on a spreadsheet.
This is such a loathsome charge: Mitt Romney shut down his business to personally lead the missing daughter of an employee — and that is one of the many personal stories about the Republican candidate revealing his deep humanity.
The rest of the speech makes a mockery of Mitt Romney’s fairly earned wealth that was obtained with a lot of hard work and business savvy. Nice resentment you got there, buddy. I guess Romney’s biggest fault is that he doesn’t want to join the Collective and he doesn’t want most of us going there anyway.
Case-in-Point: The DNC is doubling-down on the “You Didn’t Build it” meme.
From Beers with Demo and Professor Jacobson/Legal Insurrection: “The Government is the only thing we all belong to”
BwD adds:
This is news to us. With respect to that quote above, there’s wrong and then there is wrong on a scale of enormity that it almost defies description. This fits the latter. We don’t belong to the government. Do you belong to the government? Are you the government’s property?
Now, onto the grand hypocrisy. The featured speaker of the evening was First Lady Michelle Obama. Though she looked great, my Goddess senses indicated that the speech was off. Pondering my feelings over coffee this morning, I think there were three main aspects that vexed me greatly.
1) As Tammy Bruce noted, it was a performance (and not a good one, either) — not an honest testimonial, as Ann Romney’s speech was. Bonus – Michelle even seems to have lied about Barak’s grandmother!
2) Charles Krauthammer noted the fact Michelle Obama tried to sanctify her husband, placing him above petty ideology and partisanship. This is probably the biggest lie told during the convention thus far (and probably until we get to Bill Clinton’s speech tonight). “She told the story of a Gandhi, and you know…looking at how he’s conducted himself in the present scene, particularly in the campaign, with ruthlessness, and determination and drive, it’s not quite a plausible story. I’m sure in the arena it was a plausible story, I saw the tears, but I‘m afraid I didn’t … I’m sure it was a great speech but I didn’t buy a line of it.”
Let’s review some Obama’s “Ghandi” highlights for a moment:
- Obama to GOP: I won.
- Obama to Bankers: I’m Standing ‘Between You and the Pitchforks’
- Police – “They behaved stupidly”.
- Obama insults the Supreme Court during a State of the Union speech.
Good times, my readers, good times.
3) The thing that annoyed me the most, and which was prevalent through all the DNC remarks I heard, was the script. Distilled down to its essence, the Democrats feel that they have struggled so hard, and life is so unfair, it is only just to elect them. Michelle Obama’s speech galled me because it made so little mention about America and assumed that because Obama “dumpster dove” for coffee tables that we would forget these chestnuts:
- The16 grand vacations that the Obamas have had, including the Spain Excursion.
- Golfing, not exactly the sport of the “common man” is a main focus of the President; the Jobs Council is not.
- Fundraising events with stars seems to be more important the governance.
- Obamas practice crony capitalism and preference agendas unheard of in previous administrations.
All of the evidence so far shows that the leaders of the Democratic Party think Americans are so stupid that they won’t catch on to the supernova scale hypocrisy being offered. However, given the fact that the final event has been downsized, just as this county has been downsized, I have good hope that my fellow citizens are unmoved, unimpressed, and unmotivated to continue with Obama at the helm.
Maybe you are the token Democrat on a conservative blog site, but it sounds pretty obvious to me that you get what we conservatives have been saying about Obama for a while now. Thank you for this analysis of the first days “festivities” in Charlotte. Makes one wonder just how…spectacular…the rest of the DNC will be, doesn’t it?
The whole dehumanizing Mitt thing ticks me off the most. He gave 100% of his millions in inheritance to charity, so he could make it on his own. When Bain saved Staples he made the employees owners. He sat by the bed of dying 14 year old and became great friends, than took his own time to write the kid’s will!
You want to challenge his policy proposals, great! But his proposals must be pretty awesome for the dems to feel like they have to disparage him so much!
Great blog post, btw.
Great points, Jon, and thanks for the kind words.
I read your blog. Can I have my free condoms now?
You sound like an absolutely reasonable, thoughtful person. I’m very curious when I read people who say they are lib/Dem and sound like you. May I ask what it is about the Democratic party that you support? Thank you.
Like harleyone, I wonder why you call yourself a Democrat when you find virtually everything they espouse to be ‘distasteful.’ Is one of them a friend you don’t want to lose? The last democrat in my address book, who I used to consider a friend, disowned me with vile invective when he couldn’t respond logically to some of my comments – comments that sounded very much like yours, above.
