Dear Friends: While on the David Asman Show, America’s Nightly Scoreboard, a point I brought up was the lack of intervention by the local sheriff’s department after Jared Lee Loughner had had repeated run-ins with law enforcement. I hold this to be the root cause of the Tucson tragedy that took the lives of six great people and wounded a Congresswoman. Since I did that broadcast, it seems that citizen journalists and real reporters have been investigating the involvement of Sheriff Clarence Dupnik’s department — while the sheriff has spent his time talking to elite media and blaming Rush Limbaugh (instead of, you know, doing his job).
I told David Asman that I would recommend that Tucson area Tea Party groups take a good, hard look at the sheriff’s department and the reasons for the lack of intervention. It seems they were ahead of me (hat-tip Bhamason of Covert Conservatives)
Jared Loughner is a product of Sheriff Dupnik’s office
This is the report that Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik has been dreading since the tragic event on Saturday January 8.
The sheriff has been editorializing and politicizing the event since he took the podium to report on the incident. His blaming of radio personalities and bloggers is a pre-emptive strike because Mr. Dupnik knows this tragedy lays at his feet and his office. Six people died on his watch and he could have prevented it. He needs to step up and start apologizing to the families of the victims instead of spinning this event to serve his own political agenda.
Jared Loughner, pronounced by the Sheriff as Lock-ner, saying it was the Polish pronunciation. Of course he meant Scott or Irish but that isn’t the point. The point is he and his office have had previous contact with the alleged assailant in the past and that is how he knows how to pronounce the name.
Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County. Amy Loughner is a Natural Resource specialist for the Pima County Parks and Recreation. My sympathies and my heart goes out to her and the rest of Mr. Loughner’s family. This tragedy must be tearing them up inside wondering if they had done the right things in trying to manage Jared’s obvious mental instability.
Every victim of his threats previously must also be wondering if this tragedy could have been prevented if they had been more aggressive in pursuing charges against Mr. Loughner. Perhaps with a felony conviction he would never have been able to lawfully by the Glock 9mm Model 19 that he used to strike down the lives of six people and decimate 14 more.
This was not an act of politics. This was an act of a mentally disturbed young man hell bent on getting his 15 minutes of infamy. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department was aware of his violent nature and they failed to act appropriately. This tragedy leads right back to Sherriff Dupnik and all the spin in the world is not going to change that fact.
After such an event, the professional thing for a response agency to do is 1) look at what was done right; 2) look at what was done wrong; and, 3) determine what changes need to be made. It is good to see the citizens of Arizona and this country taking a good look at the government agency head who may have been a significant contributing factor to the horror in Tucson this weekend.
As we speak, this information is being shared by citizen activists throughout the country, who will not be sucked into the elite media template. Their focus, appropriately, will be doing all that is Constitutionally and legally possible to prevent another incident like this from happening again.
Sheriff Dupnik is about to experience the full force of the Tea Party for himself.

UPDATE 2: B-daddy of The Liberator Today has a great summary of points related to the Tucson event: Too Much to Hope For
UPDATE 3: I am sorry I didn’t post this sooner. HillBuzz is organizing a POSTCARDs FOR SHERIFF DUPNIK campaign, and has details on a scathing analysis of Sheriff Clarence by the Arizona Republic.
.
If you are as disgusted by Sheriff Clarence Dupnik’s behavior as we are, please consider sending him a postcard today letting him know how you feel. A postcard, not an email, and not a letter…because postcards are seen by dozens of people before they reach Dupnik’s desk. There is no way Dupnik can obscure the sentiment of the public heading his way if people write on postcards, which the mail carriers, the office staff, and Dupnik’s assistants will all see before him. Emails will be deleted. Letters in envelopes could be chucked because the Sheriff’s office would claim they could contain anthrax or some other nonsense (don’t let them have any excuse not to read what you’ve written, and from Dupnik’s actions in recent days I do not for second believe he’s above pretending he thinks an envelope’s suspicious just so he has an excuse to not ever open it).
There is a reason why HillBuzz is my activism guru. BRILLIANT.
Update 4: I would like to thank Left Coast Rebel for another “Blog of the Day” designation — you’re spoiling me. 🙂
Update 5: SCTRC President Dawn Wildman says: “I am stunned by this horrific event , especially when Congresswoman Giffords was doing such a positive thing by holding this public event in her district. For Americans to targeted this way during the very process we all respect and uphold, the democratic process, I am just devastated. My family and I are praying for all families affected by this, in Arizona and the Nation. A special prayer to the Role, Giffords and Green families will be said from my family to theirs.”
Dawn and I are working to get a representative Tea Party Patriots group from Tucson to chat about the events since the tragedy, the Sheriff’s race in 2012, and other matters in which average citizens might actually be able to affect meaningful, and reasonable, change in a legal and Constitutional manner to help prevent a similar event from happening again. Please check this site for more items, as they become available.
Well there, Chuck…
You have written so eloquently that I have decided to leave the TEA Party movement. I’ve never heard such splendor in the English language… such an incredibly well-written post makes me wonder why I ever bothered in the first place.
I’m with you, O King of teabagger descriptors. You’ve amazed me to the point of tears. I only hope that someday, I can climb the pillars of humanity to be your equal.
You’re absolutely amazing, Chuck. One in a million.
why would anyone want to do that? think about it, if you shoot someone then you end up the villain. the best remedy is sunlight in a case like this. all anyone needs out of him is the truth and facts!!
hey joe…learn to read while you’re at it!!
“Their focus, appropriately, will be doing all that is Constitutionally and legally possible to prevent another incident like this from happening again.”
Dear Becca and Response to Chucky: It is obvious neither joe or Chucky read my comment policy. Their “hate-filled rhetoric” has been deleted, for the safety and emotional health of all concerned. Your keen analysis, however, is worthy of sharing. Thanks for monitoring the Shrine; I am delighted to have you as readers.
Sheriff Dupnik is up for re-election in 2012. Word of advice to all the familes of the killed and injured, if the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is shown to be this irresponsible then sue Sheriff Dupnik and his department. Sometimes a pound of flesh is all some people understand, and this pound of flesh will be Dupnik’s reputation along with a monetary wallop to the county that kept electing him.
This man made false and baseless accusations on live TV. That is not in dispute. He might have tainted any jury pool with these comments. Along with calling into question the professionalism of his department when it comes to processing a crime scene. This man has proven he is unfit for his office and should go away.
Fox News is also reporting the FBI is keeping Loughner’s location a secret from Dupnik’s office.
Thanks for the great update, Anna!
Mut, you may get a kick out of this court decision from 1992. It seems Dupnik was willing to violate a suspect’s Constiutional rights.

posted this on HillBuzz and emailed link to Beck. Lets spread this around I think.
Sheriff is the most powerful political office in any county.
However, it is a political position and accountable to the people.
“Back in September, he accused Tea Party members of bigotry and called Arizona’s new controversial anti-illegal immigration law “racist” and “disgusting.” He even openly flirted with the idea of ordering his deputies not to enforce it.” according to http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703791904576075941558881006.html?mod=googlenews_wsj
