MUT and Mark Meckler at “Wake Up America” Rally

A little background on Mark, who is the author of a wonderful blog — Across the Fence.

In 2009, Mark Meckler was one of many citizen “sparks” that helped to ignite a movement. He was the Co-Founder and a former National Coordinator for Tea Party Patriots, a group which at its peak boasted 3,200 chapters nationwide and millions of members.

Mark resigned from Tea Party Patriots in February 2009 to focus on broadening the philosophical reach of the idea of “self-governance” outside of the Tea Party movement, by founding Citizens for Self Governance.

Mark now appears regularly on television outlets as diverse as MSNBC, ABC, NBC, Fox News, CNN, Bloomberg, Fox Business, and the BBC. You may have seen him sparring with Chris Matthews on Hardball, or pushing back against Geraldo Rivera on Fox Business. He is highly sought after for the self-governance perspective from print and online news outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Examiner, Politico and The Hill. His opinion pieces regularly run in many of the leading political outlets both on and offline.

Mark says, “I try to say what millions of American’s would say if they had the chance I’ve been given. It’s not really about my opinions, as much as it is my honest attempt to reflect what I hear from people involved in the self-governance movement all over the country.” Mark has a unique political voice, which many have said most clearly represents the citizens of this country fighting back against the incumbent machine of both political parties at all levels.

Mark will be discussing a new project for his group: Bringing real conservative change to states held in thrall by progressive governments dominated by unions. The focus, he says, is on independent financing and innovative political operations that take the power out of elite and entrenched partisans. Once this foundation is laid, Mark says, then it is far easier for grassroots operations to press for and get real change.

Mark has faced several challenges in his role as citizen activist. Mark was harassed and unfairly charged with a felony in 2011 after he tried to check-in a Glock pistol and multiple units of 9mm ammunition on to a Delta airlines flight at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport — arms he carries that had the proper permits and which he needs because of threats to his person. This is part of what fuels his passion for “Self Governance.”

It’s time to stand for self-governance. It is time to stand for the plain meaning of the Constitution. Every word of the Constitution is important, and we must fight for them all. We must fight for every inch of this country, from the inner city to the smallest rural town. We are, all of us, first and foremost, American citizens. We’ve always governed ourselves…and we always intend to. And we’ve always been willing to stand when freedom is at stake. It is time to stand…time for all of us, every race, every religion, every gender, every American to stand up and fight for liberty and take responsibility for governing ourselves.

No one should ever have to go through what my family has been through, simply for exercising a fundamental right, specifically enumerated in the United States Constitution. I am committed to making sure no one does. And I’m willing to work with anyone…anyone, who agrees that it’s time for the people to govern themselves once again.

Will we as citizens fight for our inalienable right to govern ourselves, or will we quietly allow ourselves to be “governed” into submission by a ruling elite, disconnected from our citizens and our communities? Only history will tell, but I intend to fight.

Citizens for Self-Governance (CSG) is a grassroots organization that provides support for independent-minded Americans who want to see power taken away from big government and large institutions and returned to the people.

A long-standing roadblock to that objective is the incumbency of our elected representatives, who govern with their own re-election as their main priority. They stack the system to keep themselves in office, insulated from the people they are supposed to represent. Many elected officials campaign by saying one thing and govern by doing another, forgetting that they work for the citizens. The problem is systemic, and transcends labels like liberal or conservative.

That problem becomes even more acute because legislators are often obligated to the large institutions that use their influence and money to help re-elect them. And just as politicians work hard to avoid accountability to their constituents, many large, publicly-traded corporations and powerful unions insulate themselves from accountability to their own stakeholders.
CSG fuses its financial and social capital to serve grassroots activists in America who are working to take power from a disconnected Ruling Elite and return it to a more local and accountable level. We support organizations and individuals who share this commitment.

Our platform is a simple one. Just as each branch of government checks and balances the power of the others, our four basic principles can restore us to a citizen-fearing republic with effective self-governance.

  1. Disperse power
  2. Engage the citizens in the political process
  3. Break the Left vs. Right Paradigm
  4. End the cycle of incumbency

Our mission is ambitious, but it must be fulfilled. We will be the town hall, public square and village green for Americans who hunger to regain control of their government and their lives. Read on to learn more, and then join us as we work to bring government control back to the people

Dear Readers:  I have some news to report about another shake-up involving Tea Party Patriots.  Mark Meckler, who was involved with the national organization since its inception, has resigned. Two other high-level members, Ginny Rapini (of NorCal Tea Party one one of the most brilliant, dynamic women I have been privileged to meet) and Mike Ruthenberg (the former national training coordinator), have also left.

My readers will recall that I have been unhappy with the direction that the national organization Tea Party Patriots (TPP) has taken for quite some time. It seems TPP has been overcome by the waste, fraud, and abuse we have been working against since the first tea parties in February, 2009.

For example, Board Member Debbie Dooley mocked and derided local activist Sarah Bond, when Sarah expressed deep concerns about grassroots money going to fund a GOP debate in which citizens would not be allowed to ask questions directly. Apparently, ridicule and disdain seems to be the standard operating practice for the national organization whenever they are confronted with reasonable complaints and sensible corrective measures by engaged and concerned members.

If Debbie was so keen to heap such scorn on a local tea party participant, I can’t imagine the magnitude of the sneering condescension Mark, Ginny or Mike have had to cope with in an attempt to redirect that national organization back to its foundational focus of personal liberty, fiscal responsibility, and constitutionally oriented governance. The resignation of these three patriots has left Tea Party Patriots bereft of leadership geared to regular Americans. It seems that establishment types lead by politically connected cronies are now fully in charge. Sadly, these beltway bandits, who hold a great deal of responsibility for the massive policy failures that impact us today, have become the “face” of the national organization.

If you are interested and wish to be fully informed, please refer to my previous posts for additional background and details:

So, how is this going to impact “the Tea Party”? Personally, I think most tea party types have recognized for a very long time that real change that will help real people comes from involvement on a more local basis. In fact, to rework a quote: Reform does not take place in Washington, DC. Reform takes place in the rest of country.

So, we are going to continue to be active and involved during the 2012 elections.

To that end, California activists are meeting March 3-4 in San Juan Capistrano. Please try to join us if you can! (Click HERE for more information)

We have tons of work to do. For example, it seems that two of the three tax-hiking ballot measures slated to be presented to California voters come from billionaires. Here is the information:

California Billionaires Bankroll Tax Hike Referenda

Tom Steyer, a billionaire hedge fund manager with major investments in renewable energy, is promoting a $1.1 billion tax on out-of-state businesses with operations in California to fund renewable energy projects. His initiative would make California an even more hostile place for businesses to operate, likely kill jobs and raise consumer prices, while diverting taxpayer money to corporate welfare for tycoons such as himself.

In 2010, Californians voters rejected the same tax increase on out-of-state businesses by a 58 percent to 42 percent margin

Molly Munger wants to increase income taxes on everyone to raise $10 billion annually. Munger is the daughter of billionaire Charles Munger (a partner of Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway) and is a Los Angeles civil-rights lawyer. She has been credited for devoting some of her considerable fortune to support early childhood education, but she now seems intent on compelling everyone else to support the cause she has selected.

With many states actually wanting to REPEAL STATE INCOME TAXES, I am hard pressed to be convinced that the state government money grab is going to make California more appealing to wealth-producing tax-payers, and no amount of billionaire-sponsored advertising is going to convince me otherwise. Here is Flaming Capitalism Graphic of the Day:

Why is it that people with enormous wealth feel they know better how the rest of us should live? I think that we citizens will continue to shake things up so we are no longer shaken down!

Dear Readers: There is an urgent news item I need to share with you today that goes to the heart of Tea Party activism: Defending our constitutional liberties that are being eroded by preening elites and do-gooder bureaucrats.

After reviewing the news I am about to share, I think that if California is regulatory Hell, then New York is Hell’s Toilet:

Tea Party member arrested on gun charge at NY airport

A leader of a Tea Party group was arrested Thursday at New York’s LaGuardia Airport while in possession of a handgun, prosecutors said.

Mark Meckler, a co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, was detained Thursday morning during preflight check-in, according to a Queens District attorney statement. Meckler told a Delta Airlines ticket agent about the Glock 27 pistol, which was in a locked gun box alongside more than a dozen 9mm cartridges, the statement said.

Mark had a legal permit for concealed carry of a weapon. It was from California, a state not inclined to issue one unless there is a solid need for protection. He was in the process of declaring the firearm as part of checked luggage (it was properly containerized, locked and unloaded). Meckler had prepared all the required paperwork and specified declarations.

Sarah Bond, the CEO of SoCal Tax Revolt Coalition/San Diego Tea Party Patriots, has been following the story closely. She was interviewed on this matter last night by Ladona Harvey. THE PODCAST OF THE INTERVIEW CAN BE FOUND BY CLICKING HERE.

The dynamic TAMMY BRUCE ALSO DISCUSSED MECKLER”S ARREST. Happily, he is out of the hoosegow, but cannot discuss the case on the advice of his lawyer.

However, that is not going to stop citizen activists from around the country from getting far more engaged with Second Amendment issues — not to say, there hasn’t been plenty of inspiration for that already.

This little chestnut comes from the New York port authority, and goes to the heart of the harassment citizens face in that execrably liberal state (via Lipstick Underground, who is following the story closely):

The Port Authority says he was arrested because possession of an unloaded firearm AND ammunition in a LOCKED case is the equivalent of carrying a loaded weapon…

“”He had the weapon and ammunition, and that’s like having a loaded weapon,” Della Fave said.”(Fave -Port Authority Spokesperson)

This is a stellar example of the small-minded, snobbish, bureaucratic thinking that is killing our Constitutionally protected liberties on a daily basis. Lipstick Underground, who has reason to be knowledgeable about firearm transit laws has this background information:

And something about all this just seemed off. So off to Google I go…and one, yes, just one, search of “New York Gun Laws About Transporting Firearms” led me to this very helpful link at the NRA where I read the following...

“…A provision of the federal law known as the Firearms Owners` Protection Act, or FOPA, protects those who are transporting firearms for lawful purposes from local restrictions which would otherwise prohibit passage….

…Under FOPA, notwithstanding any state or local law, a person is entitled to transport a firearm from any place where he or she may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he or she may lawfully possess and carry it, if the firearm is unloaded and locked out of reach…”

Stay tuned! The SLOBs will be following this closely.

In keeping with the season, the New York port authority has this holiday message for legally permitted gun-owners in the other 56 states:

Meckler had a legally obtained conceal carry permit from California, as he has received numerous credible death theats. Sadly, it seems the California bureaucrats have decided Mark has not been harassed enough for following all legal procedures regarding the transit of his properly documented weapon: Sheriff’s Office suspends Meckler’s concealed-weapon permit

Call me psychic, but I think there will be a heightened focus on 2nd amendment rights by citizen activists.
