UPDATE: Location has been set — at UTC in La Jolla, between the Sears and Talbots. I can’t make it, but I would love to get reports.
Dear Friends: I was grateful to have a chance to talk to Richard Rider yesterday, in anticipation of a San Diego News Network column I want to prepare about the half-cent sales tax increase proposed to “resolve our financial woes”. Thanks to him, (I hope) I sounded fully informed when I talked to Ladonna Harvey yesterday during the 7 pm on AM600 KOGO.
As Ladonna noted, the lies are starting already to promote this inanity. It is not a “half-percent” increase, which is intended to make it seem palatable. It is over a 5 1/2 percent increase. As I spent some time dusting off my math-skills over at Left Coast Rebel recently, let me demonstrate:
(0.5 / 8.75) X 100 = 5.7%
Richard sent this note out today, which I wanted to share with you as a “save the date” item:
We are setting up a MAJOR news conference/political rally opposing the proposed San Diego city sales tax increase. The time will be Monday at 12:30 PM. The location is the big remaining decision, but I figure you need the “heads up” now.
We expect full media coverage, as there will be a number of supporting organizations present. Likely included as organizations will be my SD Tax Fighters, San Diego County Taxpayers Assn, the GOP, the Libertarian Party, … major “Tea Party” operations in the county, the SD Restaurant Association and hopefully several others – including a couple you wouldn’t normally expect……
We need “boots on the ground” — simply enthusiastic supporters. Depending on the location (a parking lot is the plan), the more the merrier. It would be somewhere from Mission Valley north, within the boundaries of the city of San Diego, and hopefully will have plentiful, free parking.
We want an impressive turnout to kill this tax off BEFORE it even goes to the ballot. Doing so would be another notch on our taxpayer gun — further convincing area politicians that tax increases should no longer be considered an option in the battle to solve our fiscal problems.
We had a nice 5.4 shaker yesterday; I think it will be a blast shaking things up with our City Council (I am still angered at their anti-Arizona resolution that has proved as useful as warm spit). I will keep you updated.
I suspect a lot of “Mama Grizzlies” such as myself will be there!
