Dear Readers: A mixed bag of items today! I went to my church today for mass, in honor of the start of my favorite month — OCTOBER! I was delighted to be able to celebrate the wonder of guardian angels.
I think my angel was particularly active today:
* I got a coveted parking spot in my son’s school parking lot — right in front of the Coffee Stand that is set up every Friday.
* A fellow catechist was able to “show me the ropes” of lighting a candle in the Virgin Mary shrine, which I did to give thanks for all the specialness of the autumn, the continued guidance of my guardian angel, and to ask for blessings for my internet guardian angel, my family, and my Tea Party friends.
(UPDATE: A Catholic group has put out a hilarious video skewering celebrity elitism and gig government; click HERE to view).
* RIO got the Olympics — not Chicago (I am writing to add my little voice to those of many other pundits today also rejoicing at the IOC decision).
Because the Olympics are based on an ancient Greek ritual, I would like to opine that I think both the Obamas are getting a richly deserved comeuppance related to the pageant of hubris they offered Denmark, the IOC, and the world during the city selection. The definition of “hubris” and several key examples are as follows:
Hubris is excessive pride (or “overweening” pride), and is often called “the pride that comes before the fall.” It had serious consequences in Greek tragedy and law.
The protagonist Ajax in Sophocles’ Ajax tragedy exhibits hubris by thinking he does not need the help of Zeus. Sophocles’ Oedipus exhibits hubris when he refuses to accept his fate. In Greek tragedy, hubris leads to conflict, if not punishment or death, although when Orestes hubristically took it upon himself to revenge his father — by killing his mother, Athena exonerated him.
A reminder that the Southern California Tax Revolt Coalition has some great events planned for Oct. 10 and Oct. 17, click HERE for further information. I have A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE — the Oct. 17th event will have feature SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCE!
HAPPY OCTOBER, EVERYONE. It is off to a truly excellent start!
