Dear Readers: Many of my dear friends know I am a hereditary Democrat (my dear parents were among the original bohemian protesters in the late 1950’s and early ’60s), but one who believes in the benefits of a healthy, fair free-market system. As it is apparent that more Democrats are becoming informed, involved, and participatory in citizens action groups (such as the Southern California Tax Revolt Coalition), I would like to give you a run-down on our Tea Party experience with unions, with an eye to figuring out how to change things to truly serve the people.
I know that my parents, and many other Democrats, believe that this party better serves the needs of the common man. In fact, one of the party founders is a cornerstone of that belief. The election of Andrew Jackson in the election of 1828 was seen as the rise of the common man. He had this to say:
The planter, the farmer, the mechanic, and the laborer… form the great body of the people of the United States, they are the bone and sinew of the country men who love liberty and desire nothing but equal rights and equal laws.
Yet, the union leaders — as shown by the presence and strong-arm tactics utilized by the Service Employees International Union — are preventing the free speech of the common man. Michelle Malkin notes that The Service Employees International Union’s $61 million investment in Barack Obama was paid off with cabinet appointments, executive orders, key personnel slots, and legislative goodies.
This is reminiscent of a warning about how the Chinese government leadership operates, which I came across is an excellent book entitled “Out of Mao’s Shadow“. The government bureaucrats, very comfortably placed, will intimidate, harass, revile, torment, torture, and eventually kill citizens who oppose them. They force the people to pay high taxes, bribes, and fees – keeping the Chinese people penniless and powerless. In fact– the Chinese government bureaucrats have an “attitude tax” on citizens who refuse to cough up the yen! The SEIU has essentially become a similarly-styled political power-player for the sole benefit of their leaders.
In California, we citizens are being drained of our prosperity to ensure government workers stay employed. These government workers complain about furlough days — and are angered that private sector types don’t really care. You see, certain sections of California have 40% unemployment. While California struggled to cope with empty coffers, SEIU made a deal with Governor Schwarzenegger that protected their jobs, and helped pass a budget with devastating tax increases that protected golden union pensions. Here is something our SoCal-TRC President, Dawn Wildman, wrote:
As the doors opened up to the Center for the Arts in Escondido the union men were allowed to be seated before any women, the elderly, or women with children. I knew they were union because they all came wearing their brand new union t-shirts! That was the beginning of an otherwise boring press conference. It was more of the same rhetoric that had the governor sheepishly blaming the citizens for not passing the May propositions. The Governor even seems to think that the “out dated tax structure in CA” is to blame for our current crisis, rather than a spending spree by legislators that continues today.
It seems that the union employees have upped the ante since Dawn attended that meeting.
I got to the “public” townhall sponsored by Rep. Kathy Castor and the SEIU an hour and a half before the doors were scheduled to open. Apparently, it would not have mattered when I arrived. We stood out in the 90 plus degree weather only to be told that that the hall had been filled through a side door and no one else would be let in.
At one point someone in an Obama shirt opened the door that I was standing right in front of. Standing just inside was a union member that is affiliated with my employer. He saw me and took my picture. The man standing next to noticed and I explained the situation to him. Within moments I had several people ask me if I would be “okay” and I assured them that I would be. I was really touched that total strangers would show concern for me.
Over 1,000 St. Louis Tea Party Taxpayers showed up at the Russ Carnahan town hall meeting in South St. Louis tonight. The Carnahan staff was sneaking in SEIU members in the side door marked “handicapped.”
When two SEIU members attempted to get in the same side door marked “handicapped” the crowd went nuts and blocked them at the door. Did you notice how nonchalant the SIEU members were about getting inside the door? Like they knew right where to go.
Gateway Pundit is following the story of a 38-year old, conservative who was beaten by SEIU employees. Since the man was black, I think I can safely assume that Obama thinks the SEIU thug was behaving “stupidly”. Here is an excerpt — this is a story you will want to follow:
The SEIU member used a racial slur against Kenneth, then punched him in the face. Kenneth fell to the ground. Another SEIU member yelled racial epithets at Kenneth as he kicked him in the head and back. Kenneth was also brutally attacked by one other male SEIU member and an unidentified woman. The three men were clearly SEIU members, as they were wearing T-shirts with the SEIU logo.
UPDATE: GP also as great first-hand account of the townhall in PJ Media today.
My series on ECO-TYRANNY focuses on government aristocrats and political techno-crats whose policies and desires to hold onto accumulated power has hurt …the planter, the farmer, the mechanic, and the laborer..that Andrew Jackson so highly regarded.
The Anchoress today has essential reading for all people planning to participate in upcoming rallies, townhalls, the Aug. 28th March on Sacramento, and the Sept. 12 March on Washington DC. Here is a wonderful snippet:
What is needed, I think -particularly under a White House who (rather than thinking seriously about how to create jobs and shore up our crashing tax revenues) wants its minions to “punchback twice as hard”- is to take a few pages from the playbook of Dr. Martin Luther King. Classic civil disobedience has a strong commitment to non-violence and passive-resistance, and that tactic works, because it unmasks the opposition and exposes them for the crude tyrants they are. When Bull Connor (Democrat, btw) turned his hoses and dogs on the peaceful marchers in Birmingham, Alabama, it was the beginning of his end, and a turning point in the civil rights movement. The injustice of his act was more eloquent than a Shakespearean soliloquy.
So, I think protesters should consider attending these meetings and teaparties with the understanding that they WILL be provoked, but that they are committed to answering provocation only through non-violent means. No matter the provocation, no matter the injustice, the protesters should simply keep to their purpose and not respond-in-kind. It is as powerful as a Tai-Chi move; you turn the opponent’s energy back upon himself to defeat him, or (as Jesus said) you “heap hot coals upon their heads.” Either way, you win.
So, I ask for my fellow Democrats don’t automatically assume traditional conservatives aren’t for the common man. And don’t automatically equate CONSERVATIVE with REPUBLICAN, either. You will see that the political aristocracy that has been created has cost the jobs of thousands of your fellow citizens and destroys the wealth of this nation. That means that you need to get INVOLVED today, find like-minded DEMOCRATS or other Americans in your area to PROMOTE and ELECT, and do not assume that today’s UNION/DEMOCRATIC leadership is acting in your best interest.
As is my habit, I always try and read Rosita the Prole. She is the “right-side” of my brain. The “left-side” is the logic-based analysis area — and that is the strongest portion of my cerebrum (an academic condition, as I have degrees in chemistry, geology, and biochemistry). However, if I were poetically inclined, I fancy that I would write what she does. I also like the fact she looks out for the East Coast, while I look out for the West. In reference to the government agents that seem to have an interest in her website, as noted in her witty piece — Hey Bloggers, Want More Hits on Your Blog? Turn Yourselves in to WhiteHouse.gov. All of a Sudden the Number of Hits on Your Blog Doubles. It’s Awesome. –she wrote:
Let me be the Liesl to your Rolf.
I thought that was an amazing analogy. If you recall, in the classic Sound of Music, Liesl tried to talk her boyfriend Rolf out of being a Nazi and to run away with her family to Switzerland. Though he declines, he allows the family to escape. My brain just doesn’t operate to come up with such poetic comparisons!!! For your amusement, as a palate cleanser, I offer this hilarious version of “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”.
Rosita had this to add, too:
You’ve got a blog, you want to promote it, you know, you’re casting around for trackbacks, trying to hitch a ride on the back of some of Mighty Michelle’s thunder.
LOL! Guilty as charged, my friend. I am just glad that Michelle is around, otherwise I might only have 5 readers for my words of wisdom — 4 of whom are blood relatives. So, in another tribute to the power that is Michelle, let me blatantly track-back:
(But she told me to spread it!). The pictures I am using today highlight the blog that Michelle recommended today.
To counter the union lies: WE HAVE READ THE BILL. We can cite specific passages and their consequences. We will challenge your thuggery in the traditions of Martin Luther King Jr. in the real way he would have done it — the St. Louis Tea Party is holding a rally in front of the local SEIU office Aug. 8. We also are NOT the party of NO, either — our groups offer sound alternatives (Hat-Tip to the Anchoress reader lisap):
V ouchers for working poor
I ndividual tax breaks much like employers
C ross state lines to purchase insurance
T ort Reform
O wn health savings accounts
R emove excessive state-mandated treatments
Y es! We the People CAN!
I want to include a note that one of our avid tea Party Enthusiasts is an Emergency Room physician. She wanted everyone to become familiar with this American Thinker article — ObamaCare and me — written by another doctor. The money quote:
One last thing: with this new healthcare plan there will be a tremendous shortage of physicians. It has been estimated that approximately 5% of the current physician work force will quit under this new system. Also it is estimated that another 5% shortage will occur because of the decreased number of men and women wanting to go into medicine. At the present time the US government has mandated gender equity in admissions to medical schools .That means that for the past 15 years that somewhere between 49 and 51% of each entering class are females. This is true of private schools also, because all private schools receive federal funding.
The average career of a woman in medicine now is only 8-10 years and the average work week for a female in medicine is only 3-4 days. I have now trained 35 fellows in pediatric ophthalmology. Hands down the best was a female that I trained 4 years ago — she was head and heels above all others I have trained. She now practices only 3 days a week.
It is apparent to me that the common man is not being served well by the current administration in Washington DC, nor by may of our states’ political entities. While unions may have been necessary in the past, I think government employee unions and highly politically-active ones have now become a new aristocracy — and we citizens will become 21st century serfs unless we assert our American rights. I humbly ask my fellow Democrats to become involved and informed, and perhaps participate in the reform needed to protect the common man.
MUT PROPHESY: The Sept. 12, 2009 March on Washington DC just got a whole lot bigger!
SO LET IT BE WRITTEN. SO LET IT BE DONE.
